The best surf spots in Sri Lanka

It seems that Sri Lanka, this paradise island in the Indian Ocean, was created specifically for surfers. There are two surfing seasons in Sri Lanka: from November to April they ride in the southwest (Hikkaduwa, Weligama, Galle, Koggala, etc.), from May to October in the east (Arugam Bay and Pottuvil). In this article I will tell you about the most popular surf spots.

Surfing on Weligama Beach — paradise for beginners.

The best sandy beach for surfers is in Weligama. Weligama Beach is ideal for both beginners and advanced surfers.  The best season for surfing on Weligama Beach is from late September to late May. Even in the off-season, you can surf on the island.
The island just in front of Weligama is called "Taprobane".

What is the best time to surf in Weligama? If you are a beginner and still training to catch a wave, time is not so important, but it is worth worrying about sunscreen and clothes in which you will be working out. If you are an advanced surfer, the best time for you is early morning around 6-9am and after 5pm until sunset.

Weligama is a sheltered bay with a sandy bottom, offering long and gentle waves. This is one of the fastest growing areas in South Sri Lanka with many surf schools and camps dotted along the coast, no rocks or strong currents to makes it the perfect place to surf.

Hikkaduwa — universal surf spot

Weligama is close to Hikkaduwa, another popular surf spot perfect for newbies on their first surf trips, as well as more experienced wave surfers

Hikkaduwa can be considered the Mecca of Sri Lanka for surfing as every surfer will find a great place that is perfect for his skills.  The infrastructure here is more developed compared to other spots in the southwest of Ceylon, young people from all over the world come here and there are small, suitable for learning waves along the long sandy beach. There are many bars and restaurants on the main road where you you can enjoy the sunset and nightlife.

Arugam Bay is one of the most popular surf spots on the East Coast of Sri Lanka.

This is a great place to surf between April and September. This area also has one of the largest expat communities in the country, mostly Australians and Europeans who come on holiday to Sri Lanka and end up stay here.

Another great feature of this place is that in Arugam Bay you can enjoy peace and quiet, escape the city noise and civilization. But, of course, there are hotels, cafes and restaurants - everything you need for a comfortable stay.
